SUMMER SANITY CAT

GET OUT!

By Melissa Johnson, Ph.D.

President, Founder, Clinical Psychologist Institute for Girls’ Development

Let the beauty we love be what we do
There are hundreds of way to kneel
and kiss the earth.
~ Rumi

Rumi got this right – there really are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the earth! This summer, get creative with ways to combine your love of the earth with care for our bodies. Enjoy these activities with your kids.

ARTS, CRAFTS AND POETRY: Draw pictures; write words; make collages; do a dance - to tell the story of a plant, a rock, a patch of sunny ground, or the squirrels & birds in the trees. Frame the pictures and words. Or make a book. Display them in a special "celebrate the earth" place in your home.

LISTEN: Lie on the earth--in your yard, at the park. Feel the solid ground. And listen. How many different sounds do you hear? How many are nature sounds? What other sounds do you hear? Try this at different times of days. Does the ground feel different? Do the sounds change?

EAT MINDFULLY: Cook together! Prepare a meatless and/or organic meal. Dance while you set the table! Sing while you chop vegetables or fruit. Laugh! Eat mindfully--appreciating and commenting on the colors, tastes, smells, textures of the nourishing food you have prepared.

VISIT A BOTANICAL GARDEN: Explore the science and wonder of growing things. Many museums and botanical gardens offer free admission days. The LA County Arboretum and Botanical Garden is free every third Tuesday of the month. The Huntington Library & Botanical Garden is free the first Thursday of the month. Call ahead 1 month for required advance tickets.

JOIN SUMMER READING CLUB @ THE PASADENA PUBLIC LIBRARY

Starting this month kids from toddlers to teens can join the popular Summer Reading Club  at Central Library or any of the nine Pasadena Public Library branches. Pasadena Public LibrarySummer Reading Club encourages students to read for pleasure and helps reluctant readers along and then rewards them for their efforts.

Kids, in sixth grade and younger, will receive a book bag and a reading record to keep track of the books they read or have read to them during the summer. They will be awarded a prize each week when they visit the library and share what books they’ve read or listened to that week.

In keeping with this year’s Summer Reading Club theme for kids, Be Creative @ Your Library, there will be a variety of entertaining shows to spark kids creativity all summer long. In July they’ll be dazzled by the magical performance of “Illusions by Allen” and amused by the “Tales and Tunes” series featuring the Brian Waite Band, Brother Yusef and storytellers Jim Cogan, Diane Ferlatte and the Swazzle Puppets. To top it off the Pacific Animal Productions will display creative critters in August!

The Summer Reading Club for kids is sponsored by the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library and South State Cooperative Library System.

Summer Reading Club for Teens

Express Yourself @ Your Library, the Pasadena Public Library Summer Reading Club for teens, runs June to August. Similar to the Summer Reading Club for kids, teens read a book, fill out a prize drawing slip for each book they have read and place it in the decorated box at any Pasadena Public Library site.

Drawings for prizes with teen appeal are held each week. Special programs for teens will be offered throughout the summer. These include the very popular Try It @ Your Library Teen Camps, held in July and August. The camps cover a variety of topics including culinary arts, photography, arts and crafts, design, drawing, comic book illustration, Magna drawing, dance, film, magic, puppetry, and robotics. These fill up quickly so register today!

The Teen Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library and the Pasadena Rotary Club. For more information phone 626.744.4045.
